

In spite of this terrible and sad situation, not everything is lost yet. As you can see in the pictures, the little boats from where they used to throw their fishing nets now are used to sail the rubbish sea and pick everything that can be reused. In a lot of cases, this fishermen continue to survive thanks to the river, but the have had to swith fishing for the search of recyclable wastes. The fast urbanization and industralization along this river in the last 20 years has resulted in a huge increase of sewage without treatment, solid wastes and industrial effluents that affects public health and threatens the survival of poor fishermen's families. It supports a population of 28 million people and offers a 20% of Indonesia's gross domestic product. This river, that runs through Java island in Indonesia, provides the 80% of water to the capital Yakarta. Citarum river on it's way through Yakarta, which today has the unfortunate honor to be the most polluted river in the world. Underneath all this rubbish, even if it doesn't look like, there's a river.
